The French Rugby League Federation (FFRXIII) has decided that France will host the Rugby League World Cup in 2025. It will also take place two years after France hosts the Rugby World Cup 2023, which will be played in the 15-player rugby league competition – a separate rugby code administered by another global body. Last year, the country was already listed as a preferred candidate by the International Rugby League (IRL), due to which it is expected to win the hosting rights.
The Men’s, Women’s, and Wheelchair World Cups will be held simultaneously, as well as what the IRL calls youth competitions.
The men’s, women’s, and wheelchair World Cups
This will be held simultaneously in England later this year, postponed by 12 months due to the coronavirus crisis, but the junior competition will be played for the first time in 2025. Men’s World Cup has been hosted in France twice before, in 1954 and 1972.
Although France has never hosted a women’s event, it did host the 2017 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup. The Wheelchair Rugby World Cup has been won by France, however, the country has never won a men’s or women’s match.
