England recall opener for T20 World Cup

After not playing for England since March 2019, Alex Hales returns to the team’s international lineup. In place of Jonathan Bairstow, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a left ankle injury received last week, Alex Hales makes his long-awaited comeback to international cricket. The team that will tour Pakistan for a seven-match T20I series before the T20 World Cup now includes the dynamic opener.

Rob Key, the managing director of England’s men’s cricket team, stated that Hales’ name was considered for the World Cup but that Bairstow was ultimately chosen to partner with Jos Buttler at the top.

“Alex Hales was mentioned when we spoke about who the best opening partner for Jos was,” said Key.

“His name was mentioned a lot but we felt Jonny Bairstow was the man to do that in the World Cup. I’ve said on a number of occasions that I feel Alex Hales has served his time for his misdemeanours. Now it’s on form, selection and whether we feel they are the best person to go out there.”

Hales’ comeback to international play has been made possible by Bairstow’s injury as well as England’s firing of Jason Roy due to his poor play.

Hales, 33, was allegedly on the verge of being recalled for the original squads as the selection committee thought about alternatives to Jason Roy, who had been benched after a protracted stretch of subpar play. The chance occurred once more as a result of the unusual injury suffered by Bairstow last week, who has been sidelined for a number of months after breaking his leg while slipping on a golf course.

The decision to recall Hales was made after the team’s management had clearly changed its stance toward him, especially in the wake of Eoin Morgan’s retirement. After learning that Hales had failed two tests for recreational drugs prior to the 2019 World Cup, the former England captain vehemently opposed his return, accusing him of demonstrating “total contempt” for the squad’s ideals and causing “a lack of trust between Alex and the team.”

Hales also took part in the Bristol nightclub incident in September 2017 that resulted in Ben Stokes’ arrest and subsequent trial, and he made headlines once more last year when Azeem Rafiq alleged during the DCMS hearings that Hales had given his black Labrador the name “Kevin” in recognition of a racial slur. Hales had refuted the assertion.

On the field, though, Hales’ performance has long been deserving of another chance at the international level. With 259 runs at a strike rate of 152.35, including a ground-breaking opening combination with Dawid Malan, he was a standout player for Trent Rockets, last week’s men’s Hundred champions, and during the competition, he became the first England player to reach 10,000 runs in the T20 format.

A large portion of their runs were scored in foreign franchise leagues, like as the Big Bash, where he has played 45 matches for Sydney Thunder since 2019 and amassed 11 half-centuries and 100 runs. That experience was crucial in getting Hales called up because the World Cup will be contested in Australia in October and November. And Hales, who has been a regular in the PSL since 2018, brings with him a wealth of knowledge of the conditions there as England returns to Pakistan for their first international visit since 2005.

Alex Hales

He has participated in 60 T20Is overall since his 2011 debut, averaging 31.01 with a strike rate of 136.65. He scored the first T20I century by an English player in 2014 in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh when he smashed a match-winning 116 not out from 64 balls against Sri Lanka in Chattogram.

Following the initial squad announcement last week, ECB managing director Rob Key revealed that Hales had called him to inquire as to why he had been left off the team. At the time, England had preferred Bairstow to replace Roy at the top of the order, and Lancashire’s Phil Salt was also included in the 15-man group. Key acknowledged that Hales had “done his time” and that any future decisions about him would only be based on his aptitude and physical appearance.

Squad for T20 World Cup: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Squad for Pakistan T20Is: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Liam Dawson, Richard Gleeson, Alex Hales. Tom Helm, Will Jacks, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Luke Wood, Mark Wood.

Hales has participated in a number of T20 leagues throughout the world while absent from the international team. The 33-year-old has particularly excelled in Australia’s Big Bash League, scoring 1857 runs in 60 games at an average of 33.16 and a strike rate of 151.34. Hales’ knowledge with Australian playing conditions may offer England’s batting a competitive advantage at the T20 World Cup.

When is the Football World Cup?

The 2022 World Cup is being played across eight sites in Qatar, which is the first Middle Eastern country to host the tournament. This year’s location deeply impacts two important timing aspects for the tournament. First, is the cyclical schedule. Typically, the Qatar Football World Cup is held in the summer. But due to Qatar’s very hot summer season, FIFA pushed the competition back several months. The tournament will be played from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 with group competitions from two top teams scheduled for Thanksgiving Day. Get ready for a new kind of Turkey Daytime.

The second judgment aspect affected is the daily schedules. Qatar is seven hours ahead of the Eastern Standard Time Zone, meaning game times will be a little dissimilar from what Americans are used to. Kickoff times range from early morning to mid-afternoon, bringing plenty of chances for Americans to embrace new traditions that go hand-in-hand with these atypical viewing times, such as beer for breakfast.

Football World Cup schedule

A total of 64 matches are scheduled, which, for those doing rapid math, means more than one match will be played on the mainstream of days. The first two weeks are jam-packed with the most matches, during a group phase play. But, more on that later. The good news is all the matches are suitably divided into five start times.

And in what could be good or bad news, contingent on your sleep schedule, the start times are much earlier than when Americans are typically used to viewing sports. The five kickoff times are 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. all Eastern Standard Time. So that income even earlier for West Coast spectators. If that 5 a.m. ET wake-up call may be too early for you, you’ll have plenty of other chances later in the days to catch a dissimilar match.

The 15-man squad comprises Trent Boult, who has recently been released from his New Zealand Cricket (NZC) central contract. But not Colin de Grandhomme, 36, who has also sauntered away from his deal. Both scored Big Bash League agreements which clash with national team commitments. Boult, 33, is ranked as the sport’s best ODI bowler. And the T20 World Cup next month could be a likely send-off.

Others may follow given the age of NZC agreement holders. By Christmas, just two of 19 contracted New Zealand players will be below 30 Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson. Williamson said he unspoken the departures but was taken back by the haste of changes.

“It’s a tricky one because it is altering. So much seems to have occurred so quickly,”
