While the marathon is usually associated with running, marathon swimming is an increasingly popular way for the world’s craziest athletes to test their mental and physical endurance in some of the world’s most dangerous conditions. Is swimming a marathon harder than running? We will resolve the dispute once and for all!

What is a Olympic Marathon Swimming?

A Olympic marathon swimming is not a relaxing dip in the ocean. And it’s definitely not the same as running a marathon, especially when it comes to distance. Of course, some crazy people may try to swim the full 26.2 miles, but according to the rules of the Olympic Games, a marathon swim is any swim in open water (whether it’s a lake, river or ocean) longer than 10 kilometers or 6.2 miles. Marathon swimming can reach 30 miles. It just depends where you swim and how crazy you are!

The First Marathon Swimming

And long-distance swimmers have been going crazy for nearly 150 years… One of the first recorded marathon swims was in 1875, when Captain Matthew Web swam 33 kilometers across the English Channel in 21 hours and 40 minutes. Yes, that’s almost a whole day of continuous swimming.

It seems Captain Webb has started a trend. Since his first recorded swim, more than 4,000 people have swum the English Channel… and many more have tried – and failed – to complete the English Channel and other marathon swims.

Famous Marathon Swimming Races

These days, there are thousands of marathon swims around the world, but perhaps the most famous is the Triple Crown of open water swimming:

  • 33.3 kilometers or 21 miles across the English Channel
  • 32 kilometers or 20 miles across the Catalina Channel in California
  • 45 kilometers or 28 miles around Manhattan Island in New York.

But these are not the only famous marathon swims. There’s also the Oceans Seven, a tough seven-heat competition that takes swimmers on a round-the-world trip around the world, from 44 kilometers or 27 miles across the Molokai Strait in Hawaii to the North Channel, which stretches 34 kilometers or 24 miles between Ireland and Scotland. Plus five more intense swims between them.

10 Reasons a Runner Couldn’t Swim a Marathon

It is clear that there are many parallels between marathon swimming and marathon running. They both require a lot of training and mental strength, as well as insane stamina. But a few key points make marathon swimming stand out as a clear winner.

1. Running & Swimming Technique are Very Different

First, running technique doesn’t translate well into swimming, and I’m willing to bet a pretty penny that most elite runners will have a hard time running 10K in decent time without any training.

With months of intense swimming training, a runner could probably do it, but running well doesn’t automatically mean he’ll be good at marathon swimming. Sure, their cardiovascular system is on par with what’s needed for a marathon swim, but they won’t have the specialized technique needed to swim efficiently for hours on end.

Olympic Marathon Swimming Tickets | Paris 2024 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Sell Olympic Tickets | Olympic 2024 Tickets
Olympic Marathon Swimming Tickets | Paris 2024 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Sell Olympic Tickets | Olympic 2024 Tickets

Swimming is a full body sport that works your muscles in a way that running just can’t match. And that’s partly why some runners use swimming as a cross-training or injury rehab that ultimately makes them better runners! It’s also worth saying that swimmers aren’t always great runners. If you want to do something well for a very long time, it will require special training. It’s impossible to bypass it!

2. Olympic Marathon Swimming is Lonely

Also, marathon swimming can be very lonely. Most of the time, swimmers do solo marathon swims and end up wading through the rough conditions all alone with their support team watching from a boat nearby. During marathons, it’s easier to surround yourself with people, since most of the time you’ll be racing in a large group.

3. The Training is Intense

And don’t even make me start training. To prepare for a long marathon swim, you will have to spend a lot of time in the water. Marathon swimmers who train alone end up spending hours looking at the black line on the bottom of the pool or using their days off to head to open water training grounds.

Depending on the duration of the race, swimmers can cover from 20 to 30,000 meters per week or more. And because swimming usually takes longer than running, marathon swimmers take longer to train than runners, although this isn’t always the case. And that doesn’t include out-of-water workouts like strength training, recovery stretches, and more.

4. Unsettling Environment

Swimmers must do one thing that runners never do: look into the mysterious abyss without knowing what lies in the water below them. Eventually, they can swim through the night when pitch darkness gathers on all sides, and a minimal amount of light helps them move with the flow. And somehow they have to sail straight, without an official course. Runners have nothing to worry about!

5. Nasty Weather Conditions

The weather can also affect a marathon swim. Currents, wind, sun and waves often push swimmers over the edge. In the wrong conditions, a swimmer may end up swimming miles more than planned, or they may miss the finish line due to strong currents and have to fight their way back. Sometimes the currents are so strong that the swimmer ends up adding several hours to their race time, or they may have to give up after losing their battle with Mother Nature.

The likelihood of this happening in an organized marathon where the course never changes is very low. Swimmers also put themselves at risk of hypothermia as they spend hours in freezing water, many without a wetsuit.

Don’t wait until the last minute buy your tickets today and start looking forward to your upcoming adventure. Xchangetickets.com offers France Olympic tickets for the Olympic 2024 at the best prices. Olympic fans can also Sell Olympic Tickets at best prices.

6. Wildlife Encounters

Plus, there’s the wildlife factor. Imagine being stung by a swarm of bees and you need to keep running. Crazy, right? Marathon swimmers often have to deal with the stings of jellyfish and other aquatic animals during their swims. Many swimmers push themselves through hundreds of jellyfish to complete their races. Perhaps the threat of a jellyfish sting will make you swim faster… who knows!

7. Extra Long Race Times

Speaking of speed, marathon swims usually take much longer than marathon runs. At the Olympics, a 10K marathon swim takes about two hours for the world’s fastest swimmers, which is about the same as a marathon run.

But what about the rest of us? On average, 10 km can take four to six hours, but longer runs, such as the 21-mile English Channel, take about 13 hours. And that’s just the average. Many swimmers finish much slower. By comparison, the average marathon time is about four and a half hours. Three times that, maybe add a few more hours, and that’s how long it would take to swim 26 miles.

8. Strict Rules

If we haven’t yet convinced you of the superiority of marathon swimming, let’s take a look at the rules. The official rules for marathon swimming are very strict. According to the rules of the Marathon Swimmers Federation, swimmers cannot wear wetsuits or use equipment that increases buoyancy while swimming. And when you have to swim in water that can be very cold, swimming without a wetsuit is extremely difficult.

What if you had to run a marathon in the winter in just shorts and a T-shirt? Basically, this is what marathon runners should be doing! This is a huge challenge both mentally and physically and can be deadly if the swimmer is not ready for it. The average water temperature in the North Channel between Ireland and Scotland is around 54 degrees Fahrenheit or 12 degrees Celsius. 21 miles is a long swim without a wetsuit!

Swimmers are also not allowed to make physical contact with anyone for the duration of the race. So nutrition and hydration can be a problem. Runners can stop at the first-aid post, catch their breath, maybe take a sip of water. It sounds so relaxing!

Olympic Marathon Swimming Tickets | Paris 2024 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Sell Olympic Tickets | Olympic 2024 Tickets
Olympic Marathon Swimming Tickets | Paris 2024 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Sell Olympic Tickets | Olympic 2024 Tickets

What about marathon runners? They have to stagnate and stay afloat while refueling, so it’s not really a vacation. Their support team hands the swimmer sports drinks, water, gels and other snacks and they quickly grab what they need and get back to swimming as quickly as possible.

9. Weight Loss During Races

Speaking of nutrition, many English Channel swimmers end up losing weight during a swim, and it’s not just water weight. The average swimmer can lose about four kilograms or nearly nine pounds of body weight while swimming. No, this is not weight loss from exercise. This happens during their crossing.

Marathon runners may lose some of their water weight during a race, but their losses won’t go to that extreme. In fact, many marathon swimmers actually put on weight and put on extra fat during training, both for extra warmth and weight loss in the middle of the race.

10. It Burns More Calories

One more thing, since we’re talking about losing weight. Let’s talk about burning calories. Marathon swimming burns far more calories than marathon running. Of course, calorie burn varies widely based on gender, age, body size, and other factors. But according to the American College of Sports Medicine, a 155-pound person will burn about 493 calories swimming slow freestyle for an hour. In contrast, Harvard Health Publishing reports that a 155-pound person burns approximately 288 calories per hour when running at a pace of 12 minutes.

The 12-minute mile is a 5-hour, 14-minute marathon finish that burns about 1,500 calories. However, our swimmer will burn 6,400 calories in a 13-hour crossing of the English Channel. A four-hour 10K swim will burn 1900 calories. Proof in numbers! Whether you think marathon swimming is harder than marathon running, we can all agree on one thing: marathon swimming is not for the faint of heart.

France Olympic – Energy-saving electrical power terminals to be installed in time for Paris 2024

Electricity company Enedis is installing electrical terminals across Paris ahead of the city’s hosting of the  Olympic 2024 and Paralympics, which is described as a true illustration of the legacy of these events.

The development is being carried out in partnership with the city of Paris and aims to connect temporary events to its grid, thus reducing the use of energy-intensive generators. In total, six electric terminals should be installed in 2023, the first of which will be located on the Trocadero forecourt.

It was first used last month for a sporting event organized by university students in the capital. Two more terminals are being installed on the Place de la Concorde, and the remaining three are planned to be installed on the Champ de Mars. Place de la Concorde in Paris 2024 will host competitions in Olympic skateboarding, cycling, Olympic 3×3 basketball and Olympic Breaking (breakdance).

By completely freeing up public space after use, this solution fits perfectly into urban environments, especially the most iconic ones, Enedis said in a statement about how the technology works. The pull-out system allows the bollard to be stored in the ground when not in use.

When the need arises for the community or event organizer, Enedis provides access to the event’s electrical terminal at the request of the organizer’s chosen power supplier for direct connection of their electricity consumers.

“With a simple and quick-to-use solution, event organizers do not need to request temporary connection works that take a long time (several weeks) and have a greater impact on public space (road works). The event electric terminal is installed at the request of local authorities and cooperates with the latter.”

Enedis claims the system reduces CO2 emissions by 90%, thereby improving air quality and reducing noise pollution. The company claims that for a three-day event, the old generator would consume 1,200 liters of gasoline, while an electric alternative could run at the same power and avoid three tons of CO2. The terminals will also be used for the Rugby World Cup, which takes place in France from 8 September to 28 October.

Indian national swim record holders Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj made history when they became the first Indian swimmers to reach OQT ahead of the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

Leading Indian backstroke swimmer Maana Patel also joined the two in the versatility quota (invitational places), with India fielding three swimmers for Tokyo 2020 – more than at any Games. The versatility quota allows one male and one female athlete from a country to compete in the Olympic Games provided that no other swimmer of the same gender is eligible to compete in the Games or has received an invitation from World Aquatics based on their or her Olympic qualifying time. (time B).

In Tokyo 2020, Sajan Prakash competed in the men’s 100m and 200m butterfly. Srihari Nataraj and Maana Patel competed in the men’s and women’s 100m backstroke respectively. However, all three Indian swimmers failed to reach the final.

The last National Senior Swimming Championship was held in Guwahati. Shiva Sridhar and Maana Patel, who each won three gold medals in the individual competition, were recognized as the best swimmers in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.

28-Year-Old Olympic Swimming Icon Makes a Heartbreaking Confession Ahead of the Summer Games

The pressure takes its toll on even the best athletes. Examples of this are Michael Phelps, Matt Grevers and Ian Thorpe. Recently, Olympian Adam Peaty revealed that he feels the same way. Speaking about how hard it was for him to sacrifice months to prepare for the Olympic 2024, Peaty told how he developed negative thinking. He also revealed his thoughts on self-destruction if he doesn’t get the expected result.

Petey’s confessions shed light on his recent decision to withdraw from the UK Championship. Interestingly, Peaty’s confession came after he said he was tired, referring to competing in Olympic swimming competitions. In a recent interview with The Times, Peaty has been open about his mental health issues. He also spoke about participating in the France Olympic.

In an interview, Petey admitted: It was an incredibly lonely journey … I was on a self-destructive spiral. Also, he was referring to how he experienced FOMO (fear of missing out). He also told how he began to think he couldn’t get what he wanted in order to be happy.

He later said, I got to a point in my career where I didn’t feel like myself – I didn’t feel happy swimming, I didn’t feel happy racing – my biggest love in the sport. He withdrew from the UK Championship as he didn’t know why he was fighting (in the swimming competition). Understandably, swimming from the age of four to over 18, Peaty is still unsure of his ultimate goal.

Subsequently, while Peaty stated his intention to compete at the Olympic Paris, he also admitted that preparing for the event would be an entirely different journey. Interestingly, in an earlier Instagram post, he also mentioned that his goal of withdrawing from the event was to do his best in the upcoming Olympic 2024.

In the same Instagram post on 29 March, Peaty also talked about the backlash he received for withdrawing from the UK Championship. Everyone wants to sit in your seat until they have to sit in your seat…They don’t understand the pressure these people put on themselves to win again and again.

The revelations of the Olympic champion once again show how competitive swimming can lead to burnout in the best athletes. Do you think Petey will return for the Olympic 2024 in Paris? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Navigating the Road to Olympic Marathon Swimming: Understanding the Olympic 2024 Qualification Process

Marathon swimming competitions will be held in Paris in 2024 and athletes from all over the world will take part in two competitions, in which six medals will be awarded. Marathon swimming was first introduced at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has since become a regular event. Competitions are held in open water, and swimmers overcome the 10-kilometer route to become Olympic champions.

In total, 44 athletes will take part in Olympic marathon swimming, 22 athletes of each gender (six fewer than in Tokyo 2020). Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can receive a maximum of two quotas per gender, and no universal places are offered. One quota spot for each gender is reserved for the host country, but this will only be allocated if the French athlete does not receive a quota during the qualification process.

Two Ways to Qualify

There are two ways to qualify for marathon swimming: the 2023 and 2024 FINA World Championships. At the 2023 FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, three quotas per gender will be available, with the top three of both genders receiving a qualifying invitation to Paris 2024. At the 2024 FINA World Championships in Doha, Qatar, the top 13 of both genders in the 10K will receive a quota for their NOC.

This phase of the Olympic ticket sales offers individual tickets to fans, and those successful in the ballot are expected to be informed next month and granted a 48-hour timeslot to make their purchases. Sales are due to begin on May 11, with approximately half of the 10 million tickets available for the Olympic Paris expected to have been sold for this phase.

After approximately 400,000 €24 tickets were sold in the first phase, a further 150,000 are expected to be available in the second stage. A third phase for the final 3.25 million tickets is expected at the end of 2023. Around 100,000 tickets for the Olympics are set to be distributed for free by French authorities aiming to make events more accessible.

Tickets for the Paralympic Games are due to go on sale on October 4, with approximately three million available. Organisers expect to generate nearly €1.4 billion (£1.2 billion/$1.5 billion) in ticketing sales including hospitality packages, equating to approximately one-third of the €4.4 billion (£3.9 billion/$4.8 billion).

The trains will also serve football centers in Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Nice, Bordeaux, Nantes and Marseille, which are also home to sailing. It will also provide a link to the Chateauroux shooting center. The main terminals will welcome visitors with announcements in French, the official Olympic language, as well as in English during the period of the Games.

Reports in the French media suggest that SNCF is likely to offer bonuses to encourage staff to work during the Games. Paris 2024 described the deal as another example of the company’s long-standing ties to sports.

Since 1982, they have been supporting athletes working on the railroad through a special support program. In 2017, SNCF also sponsored the bid for the Olympic Paris. They will also be sponsors of the 2023 Rugby World Cup due to take place in France in September and October this year.

The Integration Testing Lab (ITL) has opened at the headquarters of Paris 2024 Cyber Partner Atos Technology in Madrid. It is designed to protect all Olympic systems, including a giant database that stores scores, competitor data, and other information.

Currently, 60 employees are starting to test 150 applications critical to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. It is expected that about 250,000 hours of testing will be carried out. In terms of intensity and discipline, the upcoming test operations are reminiscent of an elite athlete’s training schedule, insists Marie-Rose, a 1988 Olympic bronze medalist in the 4×100-meter relay.

Paris 2024 has full confidence in Atos’ experience as a leader in such campaigns, not to mention the reliability of its technological capabilities. From July, the tests will include data from the qualifying competitions for the Olympic 2024 and Paralympic Games in Paris.

“At the Tokyo Games, we had 450 million attacks and 4.4 billion threats, or 800 per second, said Christophe Tivet, director of integration at Atos Paris 2024. But this did not affect the Games, in the event of threats, we were able to block all flows before impact, ”

For Paris 2024, networks will handle all accreditations and portals for Games volunteers. They will also apply for voting during meetings of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and for elections to the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

Monitors have already noticed a rise in “phishing” as would-be hackers try to find weaknesses in systems. The most serious case of hacking in recent Games occurred at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Twichell finished fourth on Friday in her first open water race since giving birth in May. Grimes, who placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in the 800m pool freestyle at age 15, followed last year by qualifying for Team USA for both the pool and open water world championships.

She won silver medals in the 1500m freestyle and the 400m individual at Budapest’s Danube Arena, before placing fifth in open water at Budapest’s Lupa Lake. I feel the most uncomfortable swimming in a very long time. I’m not quite sure what to expect, Campbell told Australian newspaper The Courier-Mail. This is the first opportunity to see the competition that I will compete with. I’ve asked many other retired athletes, and while they all had different reasons for leaving, they all said, When you know… you know.

I didn’t have that understanding. When I returned from Tokyo, I was exhausted in every sense of the word. But I did not stop loving swimming and the Olympic 2024 element associated with it. I am so grateful to Swim Australia for the way they supported me when I took my leave, for their continued support for my return.

Cody Simpson’s Olympic Paris dream takes a HUGE blow

When he switched from singing superstar to swimmer, Cody Simpson knew he wanted to aim for the Olympic Paris 2024, but he dealt a huge blow to that dream. Simpson, along with partner Emma McKeon and all the other top swimmers in the country, are on the Gold Coast for the Australian Swimming Championships as preparations for next year’s Olympics pick up steam.

With stiff competition for places on the strong Aussie Dolphins team, Simpson’s hopes were dealt a huge blow when he finished eighth (53.48) in the 100m butterfly that saw him reach the final during the Commonwealth Games last year.

Final silver medalist Matt Temple won in a stunning 51.49, beating Simpson by a whopping two seconds. Superstar Kyle Chambers finished fourth (52.09) and teenage prodigy Ben Armbruster continued to prove himself to be worth watching, finishing in second place just 0.47 seconds behind Temple.

This has long been a big deal for the Australians and eighth place was a blow to Simpson’s hopes of qualifying for Paris and he is being urged to go all-in in his freestyle ambitions. The Nice to Meet You singer received a gold medal for his performance in the team 4x100m freestyle event won in Birmingham, and a silver medal for his participation in the 4x100m medley event, finishing second.

Simpson has already broken the 50-second barrier in the 100m freestyle and with six swimmers likely to be selected to compete in the relay in Olympic Paris, this could be his best shot. And there is no time to waste – today he will line up in the 100m freestyle heats and so far takes eighth place in qualifying.

Of course, different swimmers are at different fitness levels and are cutting back on training plans ahead of the next Olympics in July; but the Citizens certainly gave eager fans an idea of where Simpson might be in the pecking order.

Temple, after winning his favorite event, said it was a tough environment for every swimmer given the depth of talent on display on the Gold Coast. I think it’s very interesting … I think that such meetings every month is a good stepping stone for world champions, he told.

It always keeps you on your toes when people come. And yes, for those guys – I know Jesse had a big week last week (Australian age titles) – and Ben (Armbruster) who went under 52 twice in one day and also 50 for free, thank you. It’s been a huge couple of years for Simpson since he decided to return to swimming in front of Paris after a successful youth career before he decided to head to the US and focus on his singing.

After an extended hiatus from swimming after the Tokyo Olympics, Kate Campbell is back, fully focused on qualifying for the fifth Australian Olympic Swimming team next summer in Paris 2024. Campbell, who returned to official competition last month and competed this week at the Australian Championships in Queensland, spoke of the thrill she feels about coming up this week with a sport that will take on the country’s top players for the first time in almost two years.

“I feel the most uncomfortable swimming in a very long time. I’m not entirely sure what to expect, Campbell told The Courier-Mail. This is the first opportunity to see the competition that I will be fighting.”

As for potentially leaving the sport for good, the 30-year-old said she never got to the point where she felt like she was done with swimming. I’ve asked many other retired athletes, and while they all had different reasons for leaving, they all said, “When you know… you know.” I didn’t have that understanding.

When I returned from Tokyo, I was exhausted in every sense of the word. But I did not stop loving swimming and the Olympic element associated with it. At this week’s Australian Championships, still ongoing, Campbell placed third in the women’s 50m freestyle (24.88) and tied for fifth in the women’s 100m freestyle (53.78). Shayna Jack, 24, won the 50th free run in a time of 24.45, while 19-year-old Molly O’Callaghan (52.63) and Jack (52.64) won the 100th free run 1-2.

Campbell will return to action for the World Cup qualifiers in Australia in June, but will not compete in Fukuoka, regardless of her results. The ultimate goal is Paris,” she said, according to Fox Sports in Australia. I’m doing everything in my power to be in shape and be ready to show my best side, because this will be the last time I’m in the pool.

“I have a deep sense of knowing that working in Paris will be the last time I prepare for the Olympics, that I will compete (for) my country if I qualify. The focus has shifted very much to me being at my absolute best for it.”

Campbell will take part in the Mare Nostrum Tour in Europe next month ahead of the world trials and says Swimming Australia supported her decision to withdraw from the 2023 World Championships. Campbell will have to work hard to qualify for the Paris Olympics, while O’Callaghan and Jack will be joined by Emma McKeon, Meg Harris and Madison Wilson in the Australian sprint freestyle roster.

However, Campbell still holds the Australian record in the 50th free run (23.78) and is third all-time in the 100th free run behind Sarah Sjostrom and Sweden’s McKeon. It almost gets me a little emotional when I think about how I got started in the sport 15 years ago and how you had to stand up every year and prove your worth and you were only appreciated for what you did in the pool .

I am so grateful to Swim Australia for the way they supported me when I took my leave, for their continued support for my return. They allowed me to understand what I felt was best for me and recognized the contributions I have made over the years.

“If I had done this 15 years ago, I would have had to leave the sport. You don’t see athletes being able to take a vacation and come back, and so I feel incredibly privileged to be back for one last time in the sport.”
