The French Olympic weightlifting team has returned from a successful training camp in China, which, according to its director of sports training Arnaud Ferrari, will serve as a “springboard” to win at least one “home” medal at the Paris 2024.

Seven French athletes, four coaches and support staff trained for three weeks with the world’s strongest weightlifting team at the Wuzhishan training base in southern Hainan. Ferrari said the visit had been planned for years. The idea came about after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when Vencelas Dabaia won the silver medal in the 69kg weight class, he said.
Dabaia, the 2006 world champion, is now an assistant coach with the French Weightlifting Federation (FFHM). At last year’s International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Colombia, Dabaia helped Romain Imadouchin become the first French gold medalist of this caliber since his own victory in 2006.
Imadushen, who was suffering from a knee injury, finished fourth overall but celebrated victory in a stormy manner, taking gold in the clean and jerk at 96kg with a lift of 213kg. Imadouchen and Dora Chakunte, who finished fourth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 59kg weight class, are among France’s top hopes in Paris 2024.
“After the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when Dora Chakunte was only one kilogram short of a bronze medal, we, along with our employees Franz Felicite and Vencelas Dabaia, said that we would never lose so close to an Olympic medal again, Ferrari explained. ”
Our goal as host country is to win at least one medal in Paris 2024. When we thought about what we should improve in our performance system and how we can help our lifters learn how to win, we immediately thought we should share the training camp with the Chinese Olympic team.
“But at first we didn’t know if it was possible, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The key moment came when the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) organized a workshop with the Chinese Weightlifting Association (CWA) in November 2021, in which France participated. During the online event, the CWA said it would welcome foreign teams, and the FFHM sent out an email offering a two-way training camp, first in China and then closer to Paris 2024 in France.
Meng Bo, CWA director of international relations, contacted Ferrari to offer a training camp in Wuzhishan with the Chinese Olympic team. With the support of the French Embassy in China, last month the FFHM was able to send a team to China.
“This training camp has been a complete success for us because we shared a lot with the Chinese team, said Ferrari. We had the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the daily life of the best team in the world. The athletes had a lot in common, technicians and medical staff, and we learned a lot there.”
For example, Shi Zhiyong gave us a special course, shared his technical skills and advised how to improve the snatch. Li Fabin shared his experience of the Olympic championship with our athletes.
Shi and Li won gold in Tokyo in the 73kg and 61kg divisions respectively, while China finished with a record seven golds and one silver. We believe this training camp will be the springboard that will take us to the Olympic podium in Paris 2024, said Ferrari. We are very grateful to China and look forward to hosting them in Paris to expand our cooperation.
France also attended a training camp in Shenzhen in 2010, but not with the Chinese team, according to Ferrari. Since then, we still thought we needed to come back so our lifters and staff could learn more, he said. FFHM intends to reciprocate by accepting the Chinese team for a training camp ahead of Paris 2024, where the weightlifting competition is scheduled to take place from August 7 to 11 next year.

Olympic Weightlifting – Hidilyn charts qualifying path to Olympic Paris Games
NARANJO’s Team HD has identified four of the five qualifying events that will give the country’s first Olympic champion another golden opportunity in Paris next year. We aim for quality, not quantity, Diaz-Naranjo’s husband, coach and trainer Julius, told BusinessMirror Tuesday over an internet call from Georgia to the US.
The Diaz-Naranjo journey to Paris 2024 begins with the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju, South Korea from May 3rd to 13th, followed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships from September 2nd to 17th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia , IWF Grand Prix. in Doha (Qatar) from 1 to 17 December and the IWF World Championships in Thailand in April 2024.
“We are looking for a fourth competition because it is very important to keep our strength and be wise in every decision we make, said Julius Naranjo. The couple currently train at the Power and Grace Gym in Swanee, Georgia, home to the US and Canadian Olympic weightlifting teams. They will return on March 25 and travel to Japan for another training camp starting on April 16 before flying straight to Jinju for the Asian Championships on May 2.”
Diaz-Naranjo is eyeing the women’s 59kg gold medal in Paris 2024 after the 55kg, in which she won gold in Tokyo, was cancelled. She prepares for a difficult test from the monsters from a harder class, which encourages her to be more scientific in her preparation.
“It’s more about technique and programming for Chinese, Korean and Japanese weightlifters, who are very strong, said Diaz-Naranjo, whose team chose the US because of their approach to training. It’s different in the US, where weightlifters are focusing on a scientific approach.”
I have to adapt and change everything in order to win. I can’t rely on what I did at the Tokyo Olympics, I really need to do something new, she added. Diaz-Naranjo began her qualifying campaign for the Olympic Paris at the World Championships last December in Bogotá, Colombia, where she won three gold medals.
