The team’s journey began in 1990 when the wives, mums, and girlfriends of the club’s male players formed their team. Over time, the club has grown significantly, now proudly fielding two women’s teams. Four girls’ teams and a women’s touch rugby team, all based at Hove Recreation Ground.
Saturday’s match made history as it marked the first time two teams with female chairs competed Deborah Crossan from Hampstead and Geraldine Brown. He has served as chair of Hove Women’s Rugby Club for the past nine years. Geraldine believed to be the first female club chair in English rugby, said that having been involved in women’s rugby for over 30 years.
It’s amazing to see the growing visibility of the game as we approach hosting the WomenRugby World Cup in September. I hope this encourages more women and girls to give rugby a try. Saturday’s event also saw the attendance of Sussex RFU President Bruce Hayter, Chair Alan Croucher. And county volunteers who help organize girls’ rugby competitions across Sussex.
